Brett Kavanaugh: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

I attempted to stay away of the Senate hearings dealing with the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for as long as possible. All of the news and outrage lately has caused some serious fatigue, but I did want to stay informed before the final vote. That's where John Oliver came to my rescue.  I always love the investigative work that his team does and this episode was no different.

No matter how you feel about Brett getting into the Supreme Court(or even if you don't give a shit), you should watch this video. Catch up on what you missed, have a few laughs, and try not to tear up about this partisan boob changing our country for the next 30 years. Enjoy!

Taming the Mammoth: Why You Should Stop Caring What Other People Think

By Tim Urban

Tim's website, Wait But Why, is full of long-form blog posts that are brilliant. In this article, he talks about how humans have an irrational and unproductive obsession with what other people think of us.

He attributes this trait to evolution. The origin stemming from our tribe like mentality that developed thousands of years ago. This obsession was critical for survival because it meant you could stay in the tribe . Fitting in and making everyone happy meant that you could stay, which meant you had food and protection. If you were looked down upon, your rank in the tribe would go down and could even get you kicked out. This could mean death in early human years.

Fast forward to today's age, humans have adopted a craving for social approval and admiration, and a fear of being disliked. Tim calls this obsession the Social Survival Mammoth. It sits with us all day long and affects the decisions we make. Please spend time reading the entire article, but this illustration is one of my favorites:
