February 24th Newsletter

Message from Me

My last newsletter was pretty sloppy. I didn’t include any of the content that I normally do. I finished my article at the last minute and it was full of mistakes. My wife’s article was the only thing that saved the newsletter(read it here).

Why was everything else so poor? Because my life has been an uncontrollable trash fire lately. I’ve had so many obligations on my plate that I skimmed out on the newsletter. Understandable, right?

Well, not for me. Even though I’m not forced to do this project, I still want to produce content that is enjoyable for the reader. When you spend time to read the newsletter, I don’t want to waste your time.

It doesn’t look like my trash fire is going to fizzle out any time soon, but I’m starting to warm up to it. I’ve decided to focus on quality rather than quantity.

This week, Jake’s contribution and pictures of Cooper is the quality content. I’m grateful that I can share my life with you and I appreciate you sticking with me as I grow as a writer.

Two Types of Pain

By Jacob Raska

“There are two types of pain you will experience in life, the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. Discipline weighs itself in ounces while regret weighs tons.” – Jim Rohn

This quote has encouraged me to conquer the little things like a morning workout; overcoming complacency. It’s driven me to crazier decisions like moving to India after graduating college; overcoming the uncomfortable. It’ll get me through a difficult crossroads as I come up on a year in Austin.

The dilemma of relocating back to my hometown to work remotely has been my crossroads for the past couple of months. The decision to be closer to friends, girlfriend, family and a familiar community versus sticking through the uncomfortable in hope of personal growth. Ask me to make this decision after graduating two years ago, I’d choose the uncomfortable without much thought. Growth happens when you and uncomfortable meet. Today, this decision has made me more emotionally overwhelmed than I’ve been in quite some time.

This dilemma forces me to balance a number of what might be regrets:

  • Friendships: Would I regret more losing the prospect of meeting new people / fostering deeper relationships with my friends in Austin OR am I missing out on time and experiences with hometown friendships that could dwindle with the distance?

  • Girlfriend: Am I making a mistake extending a long-distance relationship OR will the distance grow appreciation for the time spent together and the inevitable move back to MSP?

  • Family: Will I regret not spending as much time with the people that I love the most OR will I have plenty of time to make up for it later in life?

  • Self: Do I stand to grow further as an individual with an extended time in Austin OR will I continue to grow despite moving to a familiar community?

I recently had a discussion with a close mentor of mine for help with this discussion. My mentor, after moving from city to city in this relatively young career, spoke to the fact that age and experience shouldn’t stop you from placing yourself before anything else.

I want to keep this article short and sweet and to ask for individuals reading to share your words of wisdom. I haven’t yet made up my mind so any piece of advice would go a long way. Also, stay tuned. I’d like to write a post-decision article where I’ll outline the final factors in hope that one of you will benefit from this uncomfortable scenario so many individuals find themselves in.

Cheers, ya’ll.
