Stephen and I met when we were both teaching English in China. Interestingly, this was the only instance when we have done things at the same time; I went to North Korea, Stephen went there later to run a marathon. A year after that I ran my first marathon. He married a beautiful woman from overseas ... and I’m still hoping to! This week I read something he recently wrote about ordaining a wedding, and I’m letting you read something I wrote years ago.
Note from Stephen:
Nick helped me become a better teacher and guided me through the often intense, complicated, and breathtaking city of Yangshuo, China. A true advocate of the country, he demonstrated how you can respect and love a culture despite its disparity from our western norms. As two amateur philosophers, we often found ourselves in deep debate, sitting on flimsy plastic stools next to the street food carts that set up shop every night. I can still taste the cheap beer and odd-looking, oil-soaked vegetables that were served on a stick. I'm incredibly grateful for those experiences and look forward to meeting up with Nick again(maybe at his future wedding...)
