Sunday Shakedown - Daily Stoic, Michael Bolls, John Oliver

Sunday Shakedown - Daily Stoic, Michael Bolls, John Oliver

Hello! Welcome to my weekly newsletter. Every Sunday, I share a few things that I've been getting my hands on. Hope you enjoy!

What I'm Reading: Stoicism

Okay. This isn't exclusive to this week, but since I'm not reading anything new, I'd like to introduce something that is very important to me. I remember taking a philosophy class my first year of college and finding it so interesting. Unfortunately I was too focused on other things to ever put it into application. I picked up some stoic philosophy a few years ago while in China and have never looked back.

Stocisim is my religion. I don't practice perfectly, but it is the guiding light through my life. The Daily Stoic has provided immense value over the past year. The book has a passage to read for every single day of the year and it explains ways to become wise, persevere, and master the art of living. The journal allows you to reflect on this passage every morning and evening. It takes me less than 15 minutes to write down all of my thoughts and the habit has forced me to radically shift my train of thought and has made me a much better man(still not great one but we are trending in the right direction).

Going forward, I'll be sharing one of my reflections from the week along with the corresponding meditation. If anyone is interested in learning more about stoicism outside of this email, I encourage you to start with Ego is the Enemy or The Obstacle is The Way, both by Ryan Holiday. If you don't think you're interested enough to buy a book, you can sign up for a free 7 day Daily Stoic course. Just click on the picture below to get started. :)

Friendly Feature: Michael Bolls on 'The McKinsey Way'
To create more variety, I'm asking some of my friends to share what they are into this week. This won't be every week(because I don't have that many friends), but I'll try to do it when I can.

Thanks Michael for kicking this off. If anyone else would like to write something, just let me know! :)

If you're someone looking to become a consultant or work in business, check this book out for a fun weekend read.

In The McKinsey Way, Ethan Rasiel gives insight with how some of the world’s top problem solvers think. Written almost 20 years ago, I find that the lessons in The McKinsey Way’s still ring true today.

Consultants themselves are faced with a hard job. They enter businesses that may be foreign to them, learn as fast as they can, and present solutions that not even industry experts might not have seen. Not easy at all!

The book itself is short, concise, and easy to read. Rasiel doesn't go too deep into the details to bore you and tells you enough to draw lessons and interest from. A great foundation to build your problem-solving skills on. Even if you aren’t in the field of business, you'll find valuable lessons to apply to your own life.

What I'm Enjoying: Slides and Maryland

I was not expecting Maryland to be so beautiful. The first week we stayed in Baltimore, which was nicer than I expected, and this past week we have been in the countryside with huge parks and amazing scenery. This weekend we drove out on some country roads and I began teaching Sam how to drive. She did great and I can't wait for her to get her license!

We went to a place called Oregon Ridge Park and learned a fun fact about Cooper. He absolutely loves slides! Here's a short animation of Cooper and me going down one. He just kept going over and over again. So much fun. :)

What I'm Watching: John Oliver

Enjoy this short clip of John Oliver explaining 7-Eleven's decision to run ads that proclaimed that Norway was the land of Chlamydia. Their goal was to get  that tourists would buy condoms to protect themselves from the locals...
Quote I'm Enjoying:

“Experience teaches us nothing. If experience teaches us something, why are we such a mess?”
