A Message from Our Table
The 25Forty project was born out of MullenLowe when we realized the advertising industry isn’t as diverse as the audience. Either because of lack of awareness or opportunity, young people from diverse backgrounds are not aspiring to careers in advertising. So, we created the diversity initiative to expose minority high school students to the field of advertising.
This year, we developed A Message From Our Table, a 9-track spoken word album written and performed by the youth poets of MASSLEAP, a non-profit poetry slam organization in Massachusetts, and produced by Boston Arts Academy Film students in partnership with MullenLowe, a Boston based creative agency.
The album’s title is derived from the idea that the youths table has long been characterized as inferior to the adults' table, occupied by naive opinions, and underdeveloped intellect. This album is a middle finger to that notion as the emotional and intellectual depth of these young artisans put to rest the idea that the thoughts, opinions, and ideals of America’s youth are invalid, unimportant, and undeserving of our attention.
To bring the album to life visually, we created two pieces of content from the album: Nightstick and Poetic Justice. Nightstick is a poignant commentary of police brutality that draws a parallel between an officer baton and a composer’s wand. Poetic Justice is an arousing statement on ethnic hair identity and the history, pride, and pain permeating every strand. The students chose these two poems believing they were important cultural narratives deserving of more attention and a greater discourse.
